Minimally Invasive Surgery and Hysterectomy Q & A
What is da Vinci® robotic-assisted surgery?
Dr. Brougher uses the revolutionary da Vinci® robotic-assisted system to perform minimally invasive gynecological surgeries. The system enables surgeons to perform surgeries accurately via the latest in robotics technology.
Using the da Vinci® system, Dr. Brougher performs an array of gynecological surgeries, such as:
- Myomectomy: removal of fibroids
- Sacrocolpopexy: procedure to repair pelvic organ prolapse
- Endometriosis procedure: removal of endometrial tissue growing outside of the uterus
- Hysterectomy: removal of the uterus
Dr. Brougher can also remove pelvic adhesions, ovarian cysts, and fibroids with the da Vinci® system.
During the procedure, Dr. Brougher operates the robotic arms of the da Vinci®. The robotic arms have surgical tools and tiny cameras attached that send video to a high-definition monitor. Dr. Brougher views the monitor and performs the surgery through a few small incisions.
The da Vinci® instruments have tiny wrists that can bend and rotate better than the human hand, allowing for maximum precision and control.
What is a hysterectomy?
A hysterectomy is a procedure for removing some or all of a woman’s reproductive organs.
A hysterectomy can be performed to treat:
- Endometriosis
- Uterine fibroids
- Uterine prolapse
- Heavy vaginal bleeding
- Cancer of the cervix, ovaries, uterus, or endometrium
Dr. Brougher performs minimally invasive hysterectomies using the da Vinci® robotic system.
Who is a good candidate for da Vinci® robotic-assisted surgery?
To be considered a good candidate for da Vinci® surgery, Dr. Brougher needs to clear you for the procedure following an evaluation.
While the da Vinci® system is highly effective for most gynecologic surgeries, some cases might warrant an alternative option, such as an enlarged fibroid that fills the entire pelvic cavity and blocks the camera view.
Since Dr. Brougher performs both traditional and da Vinci® robotic-assisted surgeries, together you can decide on the best surgery for you.
What are the benefits of robotic surgery?
Da Vinci® robotic-assisted surgery offers many benefits over more invasive alternatives, including:
- Minimal scarring
- Smaller incisions
- Shorter hospital stays
- Quicker recovery time
- Fewer complications and less pain
